Indian man given three-year jail term for hit-and-run death of Queensland grandmother

15 JANUARY 2020 I A 25-year-old Indian man has been jailed for three years for fatally striking a Queensland grandmother back in November 2018.

Ratan Singh Sandip had hit 60-year-old Beth Eden at Mt Warren Park, south of Brisbane, while she was practicing for a marathon.

In January 2019, Mr Sandip was intercepted by Queensland Police at the Brisbane International Airport as he was preparing to board a flight to India via Bahrain. Police were acting on a tip-off from an informant, SBS reported.

Media reports at the time indicated that Ms Eden, the victim of Mr Sandip’s careless driving, was jogging only few hundred metres from her Mt Warren Park home.

According to Daily Mail, the Indian national “pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing the death of Ms Eden”.  The Beenleigh District Court handed him the three-year sentence on 14 January.

The young driver apparently did not know that he had struck someone until a bystander told him so in the aftermath of the fateful accident.
