Nepal’s ex-king Gyanendra Shah is finally face to face with the republican head of state of his former kingdom as he accepts an invitation to bless President Bidhya Devi Bhandari’s daughter Nisha Kusum Bhandari and her husband Abhishesh Yadav.
This is also the first time that the former monarch has received an official invitation from any Government of Nepal office. The wedding ceremony is being organized by the Office of the President.
The invitation of the presidential palace is being analysed as an increasing acceptance of Mr Shah as a regular public figure in Kathmandu.
In a way, it marks an end to the political ostracisation that was in place since the country was declared a republic in 2007.
Ms Bhandari, a doctor by profession, married Abhishesh Yadav, the grandson of former president Ram Baran Yadav. Mr Yadav is an engineer by profession.
Phani Pathak, press secretary to the ex-king, told southasia.com.au that Mr Shah would be at the reception for half an hour only.
He confirmed that it was the first time the former king set foot at the presidential palace.
