Encounter with a heavily-armed group in Nepal’s Rautahat district ended in the death of an Indian citizen while a member of Nepal Police is recuperating at a local hospital after being shot during the incident.

Local authorities identified the deceased as Tejilal Shah, a resident of East Champaran district in the state of Bihar. The 44 year old man died as he was being rushed to the hospital, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, Nepal Police officers had rushed to the Dewahi area early Monday morning. They had information that criminals were trying to smuggle arms into Nepal.

The infiltrating group opened fire on the police patrol when they commenced checks on the suspects. Mr Shah was shot when police returned fire.

Local authorities are still hunting for rest of the suspects.

Police have recovered automatic rifles, pistols and ammunition from the encounter site on the banks of the Lal Bakaiya River.rautahat-armsrautahat-pistol
