Police charge Melbourne man for sexually assaulting female student from Nepal

Police in Victoria have charged a young Melbourne man for sexually assaulting and stalking a 19-year old female international student from Nepal.

Responding to a query from southasia.com.au, Victoria Police confirmed today that the accused was arrested on 14 October 2016 by detectives from Fawkner Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Unit.

Victoria Police“The man was charged with rape, sexual assault and stalking offences,” the Media & Corporate Communications Department said today.

The 23-year-old man from Craigieburn in Melbourne is understood to be an international student himself.

A prominent member of the Victorian Nepalese diaspora, who requested not to be named, told southasia.com.au that the victim had arrived in the country some seven months ago.

The accused was bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrate’s Court on 21 October 2016 for a filing hearing, the Victoria Police Media Unit further added.

The member of the Nepalese community expressed concern at her community’s tendency to sweep such heinous crimes under the carpet, “We should not stay silent in the face of these rising crimes and victimisation of vulnerable members in our community. We should not be mere spectators so that someone can stay comfortable.”

She urged community leaders to create an environment wherein “the victims can trust us to come out with their problems such as this”.
