27 September 2016: Nepal’s former prime minister KP Sharma Oli has questioned his successor Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) about his meeting with an absconding “criminal”.
He was addressing the parliament on Tuesday.
Employing his typical humour, Mr Oli made fun of Prachanda for sitting “cross-legged” with Reshma Chaudhary in a “star hotel” during his “state visit to India”. He said he could see pictures of the two speaking into each other’s ears right in the meeting hall of the “honourable minister”.
The leader of the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) said he would not “criticise” the prime minister because it was a state visit but, however, he would definitely draw his attention to the matter.
PM Prachanda smiled on as Mr Oli continued to grill him, “What sort of state visit is this when the prime minister meets a criminal? How can there be a meeting with the criminal without prior appointment?”
During his New Delhi visit from 15 to 18 September, the prime minister had a meeting with Mr Chaudhary who is accused of masterminding a merciless butchering of over half a dozen policemen in western Nepal in August 2015. The lynched victims included SSP Laxman Neupane of Nepal Police who was leading an unarmed crowd control team when irate ethnic protesters targeted the men. A two-year old child was also killed in the incident.
Mr Chaudhary has repeatedly maintained his innocence during media interviews. He claims he is a mere victim of political conspiracy.
