Consul warns of scam calls targeting Nepalese in NSW; police not aware yet

The Consulate General of Nepal in NSW has warned of fraudulent calls targeting members of the Nepalese diaspora. Deepak Khadka, the Honorary Consul, took to his social media account on Wednesday afternoon to alert his community members about the alleged scam calls.

“We have already informed police to investigate the matter urgently,” Mr Khadka said in his Facebook status.

NSW Police Media Unit, however, indicated in an email to that it was not aware of the matter.

Mr Khadka suggested that the consulate’s telephone number appears as the “caller number” during these calls. The consulate’s number is 02 9460 0388.

The understands the alleged callers ask for “personal details” from the targeted members of the Nepalese community saying they have certain “immigration issues”.

The honorary consul general, who is a Sydney-based businessman of Nepalese origin, clarified that his office does not make calls asking for personal details. He also urged his community members to contact police should they suspect fraud.
