11 August 2017: Australia is one of the most popular destinations for young Indians seeking to study abroad. That popularity no doubt is driven by Australia’s competitive yet fair workplaces. As a result, there is hardly a sector wherein Indian Australians do not excel.
However, young international students from the subcontinent are also the ones that sadly feature, very often, in media reports exposing exploitation and abuse by unscrupulous employers, thanks to watchful bodies like the Fair Work Ombudsman.
StudyNSW has now teamed up with the Consulate-General of India in Sydney to make Indian international students studying across New South Wales aware of their working rights.
The information session, which also aims to tell students how to remain safe while studying in Australia, will be held on August 25 at the Indian Cultural Centre on Castlereigh Street in Sydney.
According to a flyer received by southasia.com.au, Consul General B. Vanlalvawna will address Indian students gathered on the occasion.
The event will provide an excellent opportunity to students to know their legal rights as bonafide international students.
Besides StudyNSW and the Consul General, Fair Work Ombudsman, NSW Police, Redfern Legal Centre and Surf Life Saving NSW will also have their presentations on the occasion. The participation of these additional agencies will cover pretty much every area foreign students need to know as they live and pursue higher education in Australia.
Besides legal rights and safety issues, tragic incidents in recent past have shown how important it is to be aware of water safety measures while entering Australian waters. Hence, the participation of Surf Life Saving NSW will provide an additional value to the information session to be jointly hosted by StudyNSW and the Consulate General.
